Baby #1 Hatched 1/31/2008

Baby #2 Hatched 2/6/2008

02/06/2008
This is baby #1 and #2. Baby #1 is 6 days old, #2 is just a few hours old.

02/11/2008
Baby #1 at 11 days old and baby #2 at 5 days old.

02/11/2008
This is baby #2 at 5 days old and weighing just 6 grams!!

02/11/2008
This is baby #1 at 11 days old and weighing 22 grams. S(he) is a little piggie and eats very well every 2 hours.

02/11/2008
Baby #1 with his beak and toenails starting to turn black, you can also see his eyes are starting to open.

02/14/2008
Happy Valentines day to the little Baby Jendays!!

02/14/2008
Baby #2 was born with a problem. His left leg is not developed correctly. My vet and I have decided to let the baby grow and get strong and as soon as he is close to weaning we will decide how to treat the leg. The leg sticks close to his side and the toes seem to be paralized. His right foot seems very strong, but we are worried about it growing incorrectly as he uses it wrong right now trying to get balance with it. So, for now, we will watch and see what happens and hope that he or he learns how to get around with just one strong foot!!

02/18/2008
This is baby #1, look how big he is getting!!

02/18/2008
Baby #1 now weighing 52 grams!!

02/18/2008
Baby #1. The dark color showing under his skin on his wings is feathers getting ready to pop out.

02/21/2008
Baby #2 resting comfortably. S(he) is growing strong and as expected. We use lots of kleenex to help his rest comfortably as his legs are in a hobble which will help bring his legs as close as possible to normal. We will see in a week if the hobble will fix his legs enough that he can use both of them.

02/24/2008
This is baby #1, getting lots of feathers and fluffy down!

02/24/2008
Baby #1 now weighing 87 grams!! That black beak and bright dark baby eyes are just too cute!!

02/28/2008
Baby #1. Feathers and down continue to increase and he is putting on quite a bit of weight!!

02/21/2008, 2nd picture 2/24/2008
Baby #2 is still resting comfortably. He is 22 days old in the second picture. When baby #1 was 22 days old he was about 20 grams heavier and did have some feathers starting to be seen under his skin. So, this baby is developing a little slowly, but my vet told me not to worry yet about that as this baby has not been able to do much other than just lay in one position while his legs were in the hobble which probably affected his growth rate. The hobble has been removed now and we hope to see some muscle development in the legs. The bad leg is in a slightly better position now, and we don't think the toes are as paralyzed as we thought. However, the toes are facing in the wrong direction....so walking is definately going to be difficult. But, we are hopeful that he will be able to get around quite well. He has already figured out to use his wings for balance. For now, I will concentrate on getting his weight gain up and as he gets a little bigger if he does not do it on his own I will try to figure out some exercises for his to increase his stength in his bad leg.

This is baby #1

03/01/2008
Baby #2 trying really hard to use his legs. Having some fluffy toys or rolled up blankets for his to lean against seem to help his keep his balance.

03/04/2008
Baby #1. Seems to also like snuggling up with a stuffed toy. In a perfect world he would have baby #2 to snuggle with, but I am afraid to put them together as the older baby may hurt the younger one unintentionally.

03/04/2008
This is baby #2, the baby is growing and developing nicely. The feathers are starting to show and his eyes are almost open now.

03/11/2008
This is baby #1, growing nice and big and pretty!! He is 6 weeks old now

03/11/2008
You can see that the younger baby is catching up to the older baby now. He is developing some feathers and his eyes are completely open now.

03/11/2008
5 weeks and 4 weeks old now.

03/11/2008
The oldest Jenday was not really thrilled with the older Senegals even though they tried to preen his.

This was taken this past Saturday as he was hanging out with the senegal babies.

03/19/2008
This is baby #2 who has been named Mango. We have found a very nice home for this baby.

03/19/2008
The babie's new owners brought this Kitty cat for him to lean on during their visit this past weekend. The baby loves it!!

03/19/2008
Baby #1 has been DNA sexed...he is a BOY. This little bunny toy was his first "perch" and he still enjoys perching on it even though he has graduated to real perches.

03/19/2008
I found him perching on this little swing in his cage tonight. He seemed so comfortable I decided to let him spend his first night in the cage tonight.

03/26/2008
This is Pongo having a discussion with Ceaser the baby senegal. I don't think they agree about whatever they are talking about. :-)

04/09/2008
Mango all grown up with pretty feathers.

04/09/2008
Hi is taking longer to wean because of his leg problems. He is now 9 weeks old and he is starting to snack on a few things and we guess that he will be weaned in 2-3 weeks.

02/05/2008
Baby #1 now 6 days old, and baby #2 about 5 hours old.

02/22/2008
The babies are falling asleep after being fed. Aren't they sweet?

03/01/2008
This is baby #1

03/04/2008
This is baby #1 again a few days later....look at how much his feathers have changed!! He seems scared of the camera.

03/04/2008
This is baby #2 he has not figured out how to use his legs yet. I am still hoping that he is going to start using them soon. He is going to either have to learn how to use the bad leg or learn how to balance on the good leg. He does use his wings for balance more than a normal bird would.

03/11/2008
The babies hanging out with some almost weaned senegal babies.

03/11/2008
Baby #1 looking pretty!!.

03/15/2008
The baby just hanging out and playing. The senegals are totally obsessed with preening the baby Jenday!! He has lots of crunchy feather shafts to preen and he seems to enjoy the preening although they get a little rugged with their preening and the Jenday lets them "have it". Don't worry, no one gets hurt!! It's all fun and games.

03/15/2008
See how he likes perching on top of his bunny?

03/26/2008
This is baby Mango. S(he) is so sweet and the dissability seems to really give him a really special personality.

04/01/2008
Mango and Pongo this evening after dinner time.

04/09/2008
Here are a few clips of Mango moving around his cage and doing a little snacking.

04/14/2008
Look how well Mango is getting around!! I am so proud of him!! He is such a sweet soul and so happy to greet each day!! Even with his dissability he is going to have a long wonderful life!!

To be quite honest I just didn't think Mango was going to make it. He didn't seem to have use of either leg and he seemed to be just giving up on himself as I could not get him to eat. I fed him often when he first hatched...every 30 to 60 minutes for several weeks. Each time most of his food seemed to fall out of his beak. I was persistent though, even as my vet told me there could be something else wrong with him. And soon, he began eating more and more. He was very slow at developing...but now at 10 weeks in this video I think he has caught up quite well!

I learned something very valuable from Mango and that is never to give up on a living being. No matter how bleak things look...NEVER give up!!!

04/15/2008
Bless his heart!! I am so proud of little Mango!! Look how he tries to perch in this video!! A couple of weeks ago I would have never thought it possible for him to perch...but after seeing him try this morning I think he may just figure out his own version of perching!! I put this soft rope perch in his cage as I thought he would use it to pull himself along....but look at how he uses it!!
