Senegal Parrots

Origin, Color, and Size:
Senegals are about 9 inches and weigh between 125 to 170 grams. They are short and stocky with a short broad tail. Their bodies are mostly green with yellow and gray undertones. They have a dark beak and their eyes are dark as juveniles but develop a yellow outer ring as they mature. They have a V shaped vest of yellow and orange shades on their belly. In the wild they can live for 25-30 years, and have been reported to live as long as 50 years in captivity.

Personality:
Hand Fed Senegals are loving birds and will enjoy giving kisses and snuggles and will beg to have their head scratched and preened. They are very adept at mimicking household beeps, whistles, and phone rings. They are able to mimick words but speak in a very low whispery voice. Senegals can have a bully type of personality and will start squabbles with larger birds if given the opportunity. Owners must make sure to keep the upperhand with their pet senegal. If the Senegal thinks that they are in charge they can become quite nippy.

Cage Size and Diet:
Cage sizing for a Senegal can be as small as an 18 x 18 Cockatiel Sized Cage. They enjoy swings and toys on which they can climb on with small wood parts to chew and destroy. I feed my senegals a fresh diet of Sprouted Beans and Grains mixed with fresh and frozen vegetables. They are also given Pellets and a small amount of seeds. Most senegals enjoy Almonds as a treat and mature birds can easily open an Almond in it's shell.
